LUZIA is a touring contemporary circus production by Cirque du Soleil, first premiering in Montreal in 2016 and now touring internationally under the company’s iconic Big Top. Conceived and directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, the show draws inspiration from the landscapes, traditions, and mythology of Mexico.
The title blends the Spanish words for light and rain, two elements that shape the production’s visual language. A cast of more than 40 performers from around the world executes aerial straps, trapeze, contortion, and Cyr wheel acts, sometimes beneath a programmable rain curtain that turns water into part of the choreography.
Composer Simon Carpentier combines Latin rhythms and contemporary orchestration, while designer Eugenio Caballero and costume designer Giovanna Buzzi create a colorful stage world populated by butterflies, jaguars, and desert imagery. Critics have praised the show’s inventive use of water and its poetic homage to Mexican culture. Presented in Toronto under the Grand Chapiteau, LUZIA offers a theatrical circus production designed for audiences of all ages.
